Hi Reader,
Am I the only one who struggles with staying on top of home stuff?
β
For years I was great at the daily stuff β wiping counters, keeping up with laundry, getting dinner on the table. But the bigger-picture maintenance tasks? The ones that aren't urgent until they suddenly, dramatically are? Those kept slipping through the cracks.
The dishwasher smelled funky for two months before I dealt with it. The furnace filter was... let's just say I try not to think about it. And don't even get me started on the coffee maker situation.
The fix was embarrassingly simple: I made a beginning-of-the-month list. Same list, every month, first week of the month. Takes maybe an hour or two spread across a few days, and then I get to stop carrying all of it in my head.
If you want to make your own, here's how I'd approach it:
β Think through every area of your home that has something that needs regular-but-not-weekly attention (appliances, HVAC, water systems, outdoor spaces).
β Add in anything health-related that you want a built-in reminder for.
β Don't forget the animals and the other humans. π
β Write it down somewhere you'll actually see it β a planner, a notes app, the back of an envelope that's stuck to the fridge. Just get it out of your head.
And here's mine, if you want to borrow from it:
β Self breast exam
β Deep clean the dishwasher & washing machine
β Treat the septic with enzymes
β Change the furnace filters
β Check air purifier filters & vacuum out the dust
β Treat the animals for fleas & ticks
β Descale the coffee maker & tea kettle
Nothing on that list is hard. Most of it takes less than ten minutes. But when it's done, there's this quiet satisfaction that settles over the whole house β like everything is running the way it's supposed to, and you're the one making sure it does.
That feeling? That's what homemaking is really about.
And speaking of that feeling...
I've been building something for women who are ready to stop running their homes on autopilot and start running them with intention. It's called The Cozy Collective, and the founding members window is still open for a few more days.
Inside, you'll get The Cozy Home Method (my full framework for creating a home that actually feels good to live in), a community of women who get it, monthly planning resources, and so much more. Founding members lock in the lowest price this will ever be β and they'll always have it, no matter what the price becomes down the road.
If your heart did a little flutter just now, come check it out:
